Tiddalick the Frog Preschool Incursion – A Fun, Engaging, and Educational Experience for Young Learners

Bring the fascinating Tiddalick the Frog story to life with our Tiddalick the Frog preschool incursion, perfect for Melbourne preschools and child care centres. This Dreamtime story introduces young children to the rich cultural heritage of Australia while teaching them valuable lessons about sharing resources and the consequences of greed.

What is Tiddalick the Frog? A Meaningful Dreamtime Story for Pre-schoolers

Tiddalick the Frog is a famous Indigenous Dreamtime story that teaches children about the importance of sharing and the impact of selfishness. In the tale, Tiddalick the frog drinks all the water in the land, causing a drought. The animals must work together to try and make him laugh so that he releases the water back into the land. The Tiddalick summary highlights lessons of cooperation, generosity, and the importance of respecting nature.

While led by non-Indigenous educators, our program is designed with utmost respect and aims to nurture understanding and appreciation of Indigenous Australian culture.

How does it work?

One awesome drama educator will visit your centre bringing 30 costumes that represent the animals of the Outback.
The session is available for a maximum of 30 children aged over 3 years bringing the story to life using music, movement and guided narrative.
Children become different animals including emus, kangaroos, kookaburras, cockatoos, wombats, koalas, eels and frilled-necked lizards.
All children have 2 costume changes in the one hour session.
A Social Story is provided so you can prepare your children for our arrival to help with any anxieties.
Additional Teacher Resources are also provided to extend the dramatic play, long after we leave.

Curriculum Suitability

The “Tiddalick the Frog” workshop addresses the following Early Years Learning and Development Outcomes (Birth to 5 years):

Outcome 1: Identity

Children have a strong sense of identity, when they:

cooperate and work collaboratively with others to make Tiddalick laugh and get their water back;
use role play to pretend to be Australian animals adopting their features, movement and habits eg jump like kangaroos; stretch their arms to make long emu necks.
express a range of emotions, thoughts and views eg. the animals are sad and worried when Tiddalick drinks all of their water and come up with ideas to get it back.

Outcome 2: Community

Children are connected with and contribute to their world, when they:

use role play to broaden their understanding of Australian animals; their habitat, features, movement and survival instincts;
reenact the dreamtime story to explore and gain respect for the Aboriginal culture and their connection with the environment;
reflect on the story and recognise living thing’s dependence on water.

Outcome 3: Wellbeing

Children have a strong sense of wellbeing, when they:

use storytelling and drama to make the discovery of the importance of water to the animal’s survival;
share humour as the animals try to make Tiddalick laugh;
use physical skills and activity to move like the animals, eg. jump like a kangaroo, waddle like a wombat;
respond through movement to traditional music and storytelling of the Aboriginal culture.

Outcome 4: Learning

Children are confident and involved learners, when they:

reflect on the story and recognize the importance of conserving natural resources;
use their imaginations and creativity to explore the Australian bush and its inhabitants.
