Looking for a fun and engaging end of year Christmas Incursion?

Meet Cranky-Pants, the character who absolutely hates Christmas and wants nothing to do with the festive fun in Tinsel Town. But when he unexpectedly ends up in charge of the town’s Christmas Party, things take an unexpected turn — or so he thinks!

Can Christmas really be all about mud pies and black decorations? Not if your preschoolers have anything to say about it!

In this Christmas Drama Incursion, the children will work together to show Cranky-Pants the joy, generosity and magic of Christmas.

A heartwarming, play-based incursion perfect for spreading holiday cheer!

How does it work?

A drama educator will visit your centre, bringing 30 special costumes and children become two different characters in the one hour session.
Costumes provided Twinkly Lights, Magicians, Sharing Elves, Love Bugs and Clowns. Through these creative costumes, they’ll teach Cranky-Pants about the importance of kindness, love, laughter, and the spirit of giving.
A Social Story is provided so you can prepare your children for our arrival to help with any anxieties.
Additional Teacher Resources are also provided to extend the dramatic play, long after we leave.

Outcome 1: Identity

Children have a strong sense of identity, when they:

Explore who they are through role-play, dressing up as magicians, clowns, Christmas lights, elves and love bugs, and expressing emotions through movement and story to build self-awareness and confidence in their abilities.

Feel a sense of belonging and significance as valued members of a group, as they work together in a supportive, imaginative space to act out the story and transform the cranky character into a happy character.

Outcome 2: Community

Children are connected with and contribute to their world, when they:

Cooperate and collaborate by taking on different roles and responsibilities to help transform the cranky character into someone joyful, learning about empathy and teamwork.

Begin to understand fairness and inclusion as they see how sharing and showing kindness to others can bring about positive change, reflecting real-world social values in an age-appropriate and imaginative way.

Outcome 3: Wellbeing

Children have a strong sense of wellbeing, when they:

Express and regulate emotions through drama and movement, exploring feelings like grumpiness, happiness, kindness and excitement in a safe and supported way.

Engage in active physical play, using music, dancing, movement and gesture to tell the Christmas story, which promotes coordination, sensory development and joy in shared experiences.

Outcome 4: Learning

Children are confident and involved learners, when they:

Experiment with ideas and problem-solve creatively as they decide how to use movement, gesture and role-play to show the transformation of the cranky character, promoting curiosity, imagination and storytelling.
Engage deeply in the learning process by participating in music, dance and drama with focus and enthusiasm, building persistence, creativity and confidence through meaningful play.

Outcome 5: Communication

Children are effective communicators, when they:

Use drama, music and movement to express ideas and emotions, communicating through facial expressions, gestures, and language to bring each part of the story to life.
Listen, respond and collaborate with peers and adults, following directions from the drama teacher, interpreting the actions and feelings of others and sharing ideas on how to bring positive change to the cranky character, which builds both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
